Catawba County Schools issued the following announcement on August 16.
Catawba County Board of Education is holding a regular meeting on August 23, 2021, at 5:30 p.m., at the Catawba County Schools Administrative Services building, located at 2285 N Anderson Ave, Newton. The meeting will be held in the boardroom.
This is a public meeting and members of the public are invited to attend, however, public attendance is subject to the following current COVID-19 health directives:
A mask or face covering is optional upon entering the building; and
All persons in the meeting should remain at least three (3) feet apart; and
No person should attend the meeting if the person is sick and especially if they are experiencing any of the symptoms of COVID-19 as set forth by the CDC.
You can find details of this meeting, including the public notice that was provided to the media, on the Board of Education page on our website.
The Catawba County Board of Education (BOE) and its administration have received numerous emails, phone calls, and letters from parents, students, families, and community members both in favor of a mask mandate and in favor of masks being optional. The BOE is currently reviewing and will continue to review input from all sources regarding this issue and will monitor local and regional conditions related to COVID-19.
The first matter on the agenda for the 8-23-2021 BOE meeting is an update of COVID-19 data for Catawba County. During this meeting, any BOE member can make a motion to modify the BOE's ruling from 7-26-21 which made masks optional.
Members of the public may speak during the public hearing or public comments section regardless of whether or not the BOE considers this matter on the agenda. However, because of the building capacity limits described below, members of the public are encouraged to email the members of the board or the Superintendent to express their concerns in lieu of a physical appearance.
You may find contact information for each of the board members on the Board of Education page on our website.
In addition, each public comment shall be limited to three minutes unless the BOE determines that the comments are repetitive and contain the same comment. Members of the public who wish to address the BOE on matters that reiterate the same facts, opinions, and concerns are encouraged to appoint a spokesperson to communicate that particular group's position. The BOE reserves the right to instruct each group that expresses the same facts, opinions, and concerns to appoint one spokesperson to express the beliefs of the group.
The BOE will require at this meeting that all persons will be socially distanced by three feet. Masks are optional as determined by the BOE on July 26, 2021. In addition, there will be a limit on the number of people who can attend this meeting based on the Catawba County fire marshall's capacity code and considering the administration's recommendation that there should be three feet of social distancing between each person.
