City of Newton issued the following announcement on January 20.

NEWTON, NC (Jan. 20, 2022)—Due to a staffing shortage, the City of Newton will suspend weekly curbside recycling collection from Monday, Jan. 24, through Friday. Feb. 4. Curbside recycling collection is expected to resume Monday, Feb. 7.

When fully staffed, the Newton Public Works and Utilities Department Sanitation Division includes 13 employees. The division is operating with fewer than half that number, leaving the current employees with a workload that is unsustainable.

Newton sanitation customers are asked to refrain from leaving their recycling bins at the curb for the duration of the suspension. Recycling in bins left curbside will not be collected. Garbage bins should be placed curbside as usual.

Customers who wish to continue recycling during the suspension are encouraged to drop off their recyclables free of charge at one of Catawba County’s five Convenience Centers. The Convenience Centers are:

Blackburn Convenience Center: 3864 Rocky Ford Road (Newton), open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday

Bethany Church Road Convenience Center: 2436 Bethany Church Road (Newton), open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday

Cooksville Convenience Center: 3659 Rhoney Farm Road (Vale), open 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday

Oxford Convenience Center: 4637 Lookout Dam Road (Catawba), open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday

Sherrills Ford Convenience Center: 8876 Sherrills Ford Road (Sherrills Ford), open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday-Sunday

The City of Newton looks forward to resuming curbside recycling collection as quickly as possible. If you have any questions please call the Public Works and Utilities Department at 828-695-4310.
