Lincoln County School of Technology’s EMT Program

College1

Lincoln County Schools recently issued the following announcement.

Did you know that a student can graduate from high school with an EMT (Emergency Medical

Technician Certificate)? Through a partnership with Lincoln County Emergency Services, the

Lincoln County School of Technology offers a two-semester program to help students prepare for

the EMT certification exam. The course is regulated by the North Carolina Office of Emergency

Medical Services, a division of the Department of Health Service Regulation, and has been

modified to fit into a high school setting.

The EMT 1 and 2 (Emergency Medical Technology) course is taught by Mrs. Christyn Boston, a

Health Science Teacher and Paramedic for Lincoln County Emergency Medical Services. Prior

to teaching at Lincoln County School of Technology, Boston taught Health Science at West

Lincoln High School for five years. Boston also volunteers at Howards Creek Fire Department.

Open to high school seniors, any Lincoln County Schools senior is eligible to sign up for the fall

course. To continue to part two in the spring, students must successfully complete the EMT 1

certification. In order to take the EMT certification exam in the spring, students must maintain an

80 average and earn at least an 80 on their final exam. In addition to classwork, students are

required to complete 48 hours of clinical work.

Seven out of the ten students enrolled in the EMT 2 class currently volunteer at a local fire

department or are a part of the Explorers program, sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America. These

students have the opportunity to shadow paramedics on calls, giving them experience in the field.

North Lincoln High School Seniors Eric McAllister urges students to “come try it. I originally

wanted to be a policeman.” McAllister and Owen McIntosh both volunteer at Denver Fire

Department. West Lincoln High School Senior Laci Branch volunteers at West Lincoln Rescue.

Boston said, “It’s hard for high school students to see the future - these students have the ability to

get a job with an agency right after high school.”
