Traffic changes are coming to upper campus roads at Western Carolina University starting Monday, Aug. 1. The changes will primarily impact access to and from Madison, Reynolds, Buchanan and Robertson residence halls and the Old Student Union
Joyner Drive and associated sidewalk will close for construction beyond its intersection with Circle Drive to Joyner Plaza. Circle Drive will become a one-way road for motorists to travel uphill. Motorists will be able to travel downhill on Bird Building Lane. No left turns will be permitted from Bird Building Lane onto Central Drive. Pedestrians will be asked to use the new pedestrian lane on Circle Drive leading to the stairs at Breese to move through this area.
Signs and traffic officers in the area will help people navigate this traffic arrangement as it takes effect on Aug. 1. The detour is expected to be in place until summer 2023. During the closure, Joyner Drive will be expanded into a two-lane road to facilitate better access to the upper part of campus and the Moore Building in advance of its renovation.
